A few weeks ago a couple of friends and I went up to the Bristol Downs to shoot some running pictures. We had Jack the model and Rob the..uhh..stylist… I’d been wanting to do something like this for a while as I’m keen to practice shooting more commercial type pictures and the idea was that this would be a ‘mock running advertisement’ shoot. I’m keen to diversify my portfolio somewhat and think these sorts of images could make a nice addition. We’d been waiting for a nice sunset for a while and managed to find a few nice angles to shoot. In hindsight I would’ve done more research on where looked best as the time frame for good light was only about 30 mins and we were pretty rushed. Anyway it went alright and here are a few of my favourite images. Next step is to add in a strobe, something I’ve never used before but should be challenging and fun to play around with. I’ve also updated my website with some more recent work so click here to take a look.

And our masculine stylist….

Here are a couple more from Tough Guy. Nothing I wish I’d seen before here but I like them all the same. For a full gallery from Tough Guy click here.

Yesterday I photographed the annual winter Tough Guy event and without a doubt it was the coolest thing I have ever covered. For those of you who haven’t heard about Tough Guy, its basically a very long and extreme obstacle course. There’s about a 2 mile run followed by another couple of miles of obstacles. The winner completed the course in 1hr 11mins and it takes most people between 2-3 hours. There’s a pretty even mix between mental people who train hard and take it seriously and then those who put on fancy dress and make a day of it.
Photography wise, I focused mostly on the tyre crawl and underwater tunnel bits. I photographed pretty much every obstacle at least once but these were the two where, in my opinion, the best pictures could be made. You could get really close and in amongst the action and for me its the facial expressions of the competitors that make the best images. Looking at my final edit, all the images were shot on a wide lens and 10 of the 15 could probably be called portraits. Not all the pictures are dead sharp, not all are perfectly composed, but I like them because they put you there in the moment and to me thats whats important.
These images are by no means a rounded coverage of the Tough Guy event. If you look at the Getty gallery you’ll get a much better idea of the event as a whole but I wanted to portray the emotion and the fatigue which is so visible in the competitors’ faces. So here are some of my favourite images from yesterday, for a full gallery featured in my portfolio please click here.

I came across this video on Chase Jarvis’s blog. Chase is an incredibly talented photographer and I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from his work over the past year. The music at the end of the video is pretty corny but the message itself, and in particular the bit about devoting every breath in your body to your talent or passion, really struck a chord in me. There’s so much more I could write on the subject but it’s just not worth it.
On a more positive note, here are a few images from last Sunday when Kate and I went to Ashton Court Estate. It’s just the other side of the suspension bridge and there’s a small golf course there as well. The light was great and with the scenery around there it was pretty hard to take a bad picture. Anyway, term has finally ended so bring on the holidays! Unfortunately don’t have any rugby planned for a while but hopefully it will pick up again in the new year. Off to Scotland for Christmas so will be able to post some snowy photos when I get back.

A couple of weeks ago I got an email saying the Guardian had used 1 of my pics from the Chelsea Marseille game. Very exciting as this was my first image published in a national paper. The pic was cut out and used as Cech vs. Wilshere feature for a Chelsea Arsenal preview article. Shows how important it is to shoot stock at every game.
