I’ve been doing some “From the archive” posts over the past couple months and have now decided to change the name to “Once upon a time”. For no particular reason other than for a change. The first picture in this series, which will be published every Friday, is from the Semana Santa celebrations in Seville last April.

I’ve just done a re-edit of these pictures for my website which can be seen here.

Yesterday was my final day in Seville; thankfully the weather was pretty good and there was some nice light late in the afternoon. I followed the procession of the San Bernardo brotherhood for most of the afternoon and then in the evening I hung around the main square where most of the action takes place at night. You’ll see from these photos, and others from previous days, that I didn’t take too many of the nazarenos themselves; pictures of guys in masks get very boring very quickly. Instead I found it much more interesting to focus on the people gathered to watch, and their interaction with the processions.

Next up is the Royal Wedding, unfortunately I didn’t get asked to be the official photographer but I’ll be wandering around London on the day so hopefully I’ll have some work to show you from that. Will be putting up some more pics from Seville over the coming week as well so keep an eye out if you’re interested. Thanks for reading, Harry.

Yesterday it rained. And rained. And rained. I think all bar one of the processions was cancelled yesterday so not many interesting pics to show I’m afraid. Spent the morning wandering around and then made my way to the San Esteban church to wait for the start of the procession there. However, it started pouring down with rain and luckily I’d made friends with an old spanish man who let me share his umbrella. He didn’t speak a word of English and I don’t speak any Spanish but through a bit of sign language, and a lot of misunderstanding I’m sure, we managed to chat for a bit. Anyway the rain kept falling so after an hour or so the message came out that they were cancelling. It was the same story all over the city, all the other brotherhoods had cancelled their processions as well. The weather looks better today so hopefully I’ll have some more interesting work to show you tomorrow. I’ve changed my plans as well so today is my last day in Seville, the weather is forecast to be bad all week so have decided to go home early.

Here are a couple of images from my first day in Seville. I arrived at about 10 in the morning so had the whole day to explore. The processions start around mid afternoon and the last one finished at around 3 in the morning. Didn’t really get anything great from the afternoon as the light was pretty flat but the town really comes alive at night. As it gets dark the nazarenos (the hooded people) light the candles they’re holding and seeing these thousands of hooded figures march through the streets all night long is pretty amazing. Definitely noticed that Spanish people don’t like having their picture taken, much more so than the French perhaps, so spent most of the day getting a lot of angry looks. Another day in Seville today and then will go to Cordoba for the day tomorrow I think.
