I’ve been luck enough recently to have started doing some work for the Associated Press out here in Moscow. All the photographers, in particular Ivan (who’s cracking picture of Putin crying you might have seen recently) and Sasha, have been incredibly kind in helping me with absolutely anything as well as trusting me to do a bit of work for them. I covered election day in Moscow, including the big pro-Putin rally that I’ve blogged about here and then last Monday night I covered the Dinamo Moscow vs. Anzhi Makhachkala football game. The match itself was unimportant but it was Guus Hiddink’s first game in charge of Anzhi so I needed pictures of him as well as a few star players. Since being bought by a billionaire oligarch Anzhi have spent a ridiculous amount of money on players such as Samuel Eto’o, Yuri Zhirkov, Roberto Carlos and Chris Samba to name a few. The city of Makhachkala in Dagestan is so dangerous that all the players live and train in Moscow and then they fly down to Dagestan for home games. It was a pretty boring game (Anzhi won 1-0) but the atmosphere was great. There were enough police to invade a small country and at one point the game was stopped for a few minutes because smoke from flares in the crowd was so bad. Pictures of the actual game looked awful as the backgrounds were crap but below are a few frames I like.

Yesterday I went to Swindon Town FC to cover the arrival of Paolo di Canio as their new manager. I’d never covered anything like this before so the whole press conference thing was new to me but think it went ok. Typical Italian so he made some good faces and spoke very well I thought, much better than Capello. Very boring blog post but I’ve pretty much finished all my exams and have absolutely nothing better to do. Looking forward to covering some of the Somerset Yorkshire game this week and then the weekend in front of the Test match!

A couple of weeks ago I got an email saying the Guardian had used 1 of my pics from the Chelsea Marseille game. Very exciting as this was my first image published in a national paper. The pic was cut out and used as Cech vs. Wilshere feature for a Chelsea Arsenal preview article. Shows how important it is to shoot stock at every game.

I’ve been told by a few people recently that I need to shoot more football (as there’s none in my portfolio) so where better to start than a Champions League game at Stamford Bridge! Nothing like jumping in at the deep end… So felt pretty out of my depth when I arrived and decided to set up next to everyone else. I wouldn’t get anything unique but at least I’d get something. First half Chelsea were attacking the other end so didn’t get anything decent from the 2 goals and then second half they didn’t score so no goal or celebration pics for me! First time I’d shot football in a while aswell so found it quite hard going but got some alright action stuff. Not sure what I’m up to for the rest of the week as still waiting on Ryder Cup confirmation, otherwise it’ll be rugby at the weekend. Full gallery here.
